Can I start my auto car in L or 2 then move to D for a better pick up? Any tips for a better pick up in Auto?

Leaving the car in D and giving it more gas should make the car hold each gear longer and the transmission should start in 1st gear (typically L) to start with. If you are about to overtake someone you could turn overdrive off or downshift one gear before getting on the gas to get a little bit of a headstart. The only other reason to start with the shifter in L then shift to 2 would be if you are trying to race and the car shift's before redline, although I would think this would be harder on the transmission then leaving it in D and letting it do it's thing.
