Pimples / reddish spots on my face! Advice please?
My face used to be smooth and pimple-free but now...it often has budding pimples or reddish spots...
Does anyone know what medicine like cream or gel I can use to relieve this conidition? I have been using Differin (the name of a cream) but the effectiveness is declining as time goes...
Differin does work because it is a drying agent that drys pimples up. However you need like about a month or 2 to see results. Are you taking any meds? If you don't you can try asking your doctor about it. I give you a brief summary.
Antibiotics for acne include doxycycline( $15 a month in singapore dollars), minocycline( $91.47 for 2 weeks in singapore dollars), tetracycline, clindamycin and erythromycin. Antibiotics kill the acne bacteria causing those pimples directly. I only took doxycycline and it worked but recently didn't so my doctor gave me minocycline and my face went back clear again. I haven't try the other antibiotics but it doesn't mean they won't work. You need patient with antibiotics because it takes about 2 weeks to 6 months to see results.
Accutane, is a vitamin A deriative and is a very powerful drug. It costs about $180 in singapore dollars per month. Accutane stops the oil glands in your body from functioning and producing oil. This is because when you have oil clogged in your pores the bacteria comes and grow there because it likes the enviroment there. So no oil so acne. However accutane is only prescribe for severe acne those that can cause scarring because it has side effects. Side effects are related to the oil glands. Areas where there are no acne will become extremely dry such as you lips( will crack) eyes and areas with normal skin. It can also cause the baby to be deformed. People taking accutane also have monthly blood tests to ensure accutane levels are in control because high doses cause liver damage. Accutane takes about 2-3 months to see effects although for the first month, acne may get worse. But it is a good drug as it clears acne right up with no more breakouts.
Oral contraceptives may be used if the acne becomes resistant to antibiotics and they include Dianette( $28 a month in singapore dollars), yasmin and many others. It works the same way as accutane but it does not stop the oil glands. It just prevents the oil glands from making to much oil. However contraceptives is not without side effects. Some people complain of being moody, weight gain etc but it varies from person to person. Ask your doctor about it.
Lastly unless your acne is not really bad. Doctors normally will prescribe topical creams or gels first instead of pill although I was given both. There are some topical gels and creams known as Retin-A( $25 per tube-Sing dollars), differin and antibiotic gel. I was on antibiotic and Retin-A at the same time. Retin-A helps to treat my acne marks and scars left behind after acne. It may also help treat acne as well so its good stuff but it should only be use at night.
